Sustainability

Following the objectives of the 2020-2023 Sustainability Plan, and as a result of the actions implemented during that period, it was achieved that 2024 was the year with the lowest electricity consumption in the history of the Teatre Lliure de Montjuic. Along the same lines, 2025 is the year with the lowest gas consumption in our history.

From 2024, in addition to maintaining the actions of continuous improvement of our buildings and operations, we have placed emphasis on improving the sustainability of our stage productions processes based on the Theatre Green Book model. Since 2025, we have been sharing this work with other performing arts entities in Catalonia and with the ICEC, the Institut Català de les Empreses Culturals of the Generalitat, as well as other entities from the rest of the state.

In turn, since 2024 we have tried to improve our social impact as well as our environmental impact. We continue to work intensively on other Sustainable Development Goals, in addition to environmental improvement. We particularly highlight the objectives relating to Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Quality Education (SDG 4) and Reduction of Inequalities (SDG 10). In this context, we highlight our Educational programme and the Ànima Lliure project.

The Teatre Lliure obtained in 2022 and has renewed in 2025 the Environmental Quality Guarantee Certificate of the Generalitat de Catalunya, and renews annually the Biosphere Certification.

  • The actions to improve energy efficiency of the Teatre Lliure’s Sustainability Plan were carried out with the support of the FEDER-Departament de Cultura of the Generalitat, the Next Generation-EU-Generalitat Funds and the EU Next Generation Funds - Recovery Planb- INAEM.

Thanks to the EU’s Next Generation grant line, we were able to push forward the digitisation of the Teatre Lliure stage light and its conversion to LED technology.
A first phase of the Season 22/23 was carried out thanks to funding from the Next Generation Funds - Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya, in which a total of € 224,514.36 was invested. The second phase could be carried out the Season 23/24 . In addition to digitizing, it was possible to robotize a significant part of our lighting equipment, from a total investment of 240,411.20 €, thanks to a new grant from Next Generation Funds, this time from the Ministry of Culture - INAEM.
The total investment of both operations was €464,925.56, of which €361,2776.62 came from the EU’s Next Generation Funds.
